Salt Lake GOP Dumps Pimp-Wiretapper O’Keefe as Speaker After Arrest

January 27, 2010

(ChattahBox)—-James O’Keefe, 25, a radical right-wing activist, “filmmaker” and ACORN slayer was until his arrest on Monday, the darling Boy Wonder of Conservatives, Fox News, and even 31 Republican congressman who co-sponsored a resolution praising O’Keefe for his controversial undercover filming of ACORN field offices. O’Keefe along with three other men, entered the offices of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) in Louisiana under false pretenses and attempted to interfere with the Senator’s phone lines. The group of intruders, including O’Keefe, were charged by the FBI with “entering federal property under false pretenses with the intent of committing a felony.” And the Salt Lake County Republicans announced today that they were replacing the would-be wiretapper James O’Keefe as the keynote speaker for their Feb. 4 Lincoln Day Dinner. County GOP Chairman Thomas Wright said, “we don’t want to be involved with that.”

According to the Salt Lake Tribune:

“His topic was to be “his national exposé of ACORN’s unethical behavior, his changes in Congress and [how he will] inspire our Party’s passion for a grassroots comeback.”

“The fundraising announcement said donations of $4,000 to $7,500 would entitle contributing groups to have access to elected Republican officials and the guest speaker at a VIP reception.” “We’re disappointed,” he said of O’Keefe’s arrest on felony charges. “He doesn’t necessarily represent the Republican Party.”

O’Keefe’s partner during his campaign to destroy ACORN, Hannah Giles, responded to his arrest: “I am shocked by the reports of this behavior. I am well aware that following the law is an integral part of being a good investigative journalist. I take that responsibility and accountability very seriously. I certainly hope these reports are untrue.”

And ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis, took the opportunity to condemn O’Keefe for his release of a series of heavily edited videotapes, purporting to show wrongdoing by ACORN employees that set of a media and political firestorm:

“Finally, people will see Mr. O‘Keefe for what we knew him to be,” Lewis said during an interview Tuesday night on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show.” “Whatever his views are, he will break the law in order to further his agenda. He broke the law when he taped us. He broke the law when he entered Mary Landrieu‘s office.”

“Now, finally, I think people can see that this is who they‘re dealing with,” she said. “He is no hero. He really is a criminal.”

After his release from jail on Tuesday on a $10,000 bond, O’Keefe used his Twitter account to announce to the world that he was a “journalist” and that truth would prevail:

“He doesn’t necessarily represent the Republican Party.”

Of *course* he represents the Republican Party! Doesn’t anyone remember Watergate? Illegal wiretaps of the opposition – or really, of anyone who disagrees with you, according the the Cheney-Bush Administration – is traditional Republican behavior.

After all, laws only apply to the poor people, not to wealthy Republicans, right?
