The Super Bowl, Nachos and a Tim Tebow Mask?

February 7, 2010

(ChattahBox)–Super Bowl Sunday means parties, beer, chicken wings, nachos and fun. Somehow wearing a paper mask in the image of Tim Tebow doesn’t fit into the Super Bowl equation. The controversial ad featuring Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Tim Tebow and his mom Pam, is due to air during Sunday’s Super Bowl game between the Saints and the Colts. The anti-choice ad sponsored by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, will tell the story of how Pam Tebow while on a missionary trip to the Philippines Pam fell ill, and was treated with a medicine that may have harmed her fetus. She claims she was told by doctors she should get an abortion, but she chose life instead, and the result is her talented evangelical son, Florida Gators star quarterback Tim Tebow. That’s wonderful that Pam Tebow made a choice that worked out for her family. But the agenda of The Focus on the Family is to overturn Roe v. Wade, to outlaw a woman’s right to make her own reproductive choices. Additionally, since abortion is illegal in the Philippines, it’s doubtful Pam Tebow even had a choice at the time.

CBS and other networks airing the Super Bowl game have had a long-standing policy of refusing to air divisive advocacy commercials during the family event, until now. The controversial ad with the tag line, “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life,” is being celebrated by anti-choice groups. And the Wisconsin Right to Life group, has taken it one step further, by asking supporters to download a Tim Tebow mask and wear it while watching the Super Bowl to make “a statement for life” and “strong family values.”

As noted by Jehmu Greene, president of the Women’s Media Center, “An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year — an event designed to bring Americans together.”

Barbara Lyons, Executive Director of Wisconsin Right to Life says that the wearing of a Tim Tebow mask on Super Bowl Sunday is “fun.” “Tim Tebow’s life matters,” said Lyons. “And we can all have a little fun and show the public that Tim and his Mom and Dad are an inspiration to all of us.”

Lyons wants everyone who cares about family values to don the mask on Sunday:

“To show your support for Tim, his mother and father, and Focus on the Family for providing an inspirational message to the world’s largest television audience, Wisconsin Right to Life invites everyone who cares about life and strong family values to download a Tim Tebow mask and wear it during the Super Bowl game on Sunday,” said Lyons.

“The Super Bowl is America’s biggest party,” said Lyons. “So have fun, don your Tim Tebow mask when the Focus on the Family television ad airs. Wear it proudly. And make a statement for life. And maybe it’s not just a coincidence the Saints are playing Sunday.”

The idea of wearing a mask of the Florida Gator quarterback with his biblical eye black, while enjoying the Super Bowl game with friends and family, is just a tad creepy.
