Women To Serve On Navy Subs For First Time Starting In 2011

April 29, 2010

US (ChattahBox) – Authorities made an announcement last month official today, saying that women will be allowed to work on Naval submarines for the first time in 2011.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates originally made the announcement a month ago, but a delay as Congress reviewed and signed the major policy change made it impossible to make it official until today.

According to the change, the first women will be given status on the elite submarine missions starting in 2011, following an intense 15-month training program.

Three female officers will be placed withing eight crews on larger subs, smaller subs being too small to accommodate the necessary infrastructure changes.

While the first wave of changes effects only officers, the next few years will see female sailors being placed within crews as well.
