Detroit Police Officer Becomes First In Five Years Slain On Duty

May 3, 2010

Michigan (ChattahBox) – A veteran cop was killed in the line of duty this morning, becoming the first in five years to be gunned down by a suspect.

The officer, who is remaining unnamed for the moment to protect the privacy of his widow and young son, was with four other officers when they responded to a report of shots fired in a Detroit neighborhood.

The suspect began to shoot at police from the house, slaying one and wounding the other four, before being shot himself.

The four officers and suspect remain in hospital. Their condition is unknown.

Police found drugs in the house, though how much was not immediately apparent.

The murdered policeman had been on the force for 12 years.

“I surely hope that the citizens here who know things, that can help the police department, that we need to come together as a city to stop this madness,” Mayor Dave Bing said of the tragedy.
