Az. Pol Steve Blair: Mural of Hispanic Boy ‘Defaces’ Public Building

June 5, 2010

(ChattahBox)—As previously reported by this writer, Steve Blair, a bigoted City Councilman in Prescott, Arizona, fueled an ugly campaign of hate and racism targeting an elementary school mural depicting a brown-skinned Hispanic boy. The result? The school principal, Jeff Lane ordered the artists to lighten the skin tones of the students in the mural to placate Blair and his loudmouth mob of Klansmen. The uproar has once again, placed the troubling nativism of Arizona in the national spotlight. KYCA radio, the local station that carried Blair’s afternoon hate talk show, promptly sacked Blair over his ugly racism, which incited residents to hurl racial epithets at school children. And the former mayor of Prescott, Jack Wilson, is calling on Blair to resign from the city council, for causing a “firestorm of bad publicity” for Prescott.

And what is Blair’s response, after being fired? He says he did nothing wrong. Blair insists he is not a racist for objecting to a “big ol’ black guy in the middle” of a mural in the predominantly white town of Prescott. The image is “defacing a public building” complained Blair. And like most racists, Blair suffers from a complete lack of self-awareness, by casting himself as a victim, while whining about his First Amendment rights.

After being fired from KYCA radio, a Fox News affiliate that also carries Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage, Blair was interviewed by Lynne LaMaster of Prescott News. Audio of the interview, reveals Blair’s ignorant xenophobia and his disdain for President Obama, our nation’s first black president. Blair’s racist rant is itself, a portrait of racism in America today.

The transcript of Blair’s interview and the accompanying audio is provided below. No additional comment is required:

LAMASTER: “Can you put your concerns about the mural, kind of in a concise statement?”

BLAIR: “Bottom line, is my concern about the mural was is that it was defacing a public building of a historic nature in one of the heaviest traveled roadways in Prescott Arizona, without any edification of what the mural was supposed to be — what it stood for. And it’s a piece of public art that I don’t support. Not there. Somewhere else, maybe yes. But not there. And based upon the fact that no one bothered to let the community know what that mural was supposed to depict, made it very difficult even to buy-in on what the mission statement of that mural was supposed to be. Plus, it was too big, too in your face, wrong place, wrong time. That’s about as clear and concise as I can get.”

LAMASTER: “OK, so part of the problem is, you don’t get what it’s saying. Is that correct?”

BLAIR: “Does anybody? ... If you were just an everyday Joe in the city of Prescott … it looked like a guy in my opinion, a black guy, brown guy holding a stick and a big flowers and stuff. What was it supposed to mean? I don’t know what it was supposed to mean.” […]

LAMASTER: “Bottom line is, where is your heart as far as the city of Prescott goes?”

BLAIR: […] “My heart is in the city of Prescott. Maybe my heart shouldn’t be so much in the city of Prescot. And I wouldn’t care so much to open my mouth .. Not everything is OK. And not everything should be looked at, as I have to be politically correct around everybody I stand with.” […]

BLAIR: “I’m a citizen and in the city of Prescott and the world we live in. I have rights and those rights we should be able to say, without being chastised what we say as an individual. So, that’s the hard part. The hard part is, where do people draw the line and stand up and say what’s right or wrong?”

LAMASTER: “Do you mind having a public discussion about the mural and how you feel about it? Are you afraid of dissenting opinions?”

BLAIR: “No, I would like to. I want someone to tell me why I should like that. That’s what I want someone to tell me. … Should we be able to paint Kumbaya on the side of the Elks theater?” […]

BLAIR: “Why because I don’t like, it I’m all of a sudden a racist? .. Some guy called me and said, doesn’t that look like a big ol, black guy in the middle of that picture? And I said it does. Maybe it has something to do with the guy that’s in the White House. Whether you like it or not, he’s our president and he is black. There’s nothing racism [sic] about what I just said. It’s a statement and it’s a fact. And everyone wants to paint yah as some kind of crook.”

LAMASTER: “Any regrets about that? Would you take back your comments regarding the mural if you had known this was going to happen?”

BLAIR: “No. I don’t think my comments were wrong. Maybe, they weren’t stated quite perfectly in an educated mind. But I think, based upon the people that I talked to that support what I said, was the simple fact that why in Prescott, Arizona in this time in history, are we allowing people to deface historic buildings with murals?”

The problem with the complaints is not the mural it’s self but what it represents.sir, you are ignorant to the fact that there is diversity in the “white town” of Prescott. That is childish thinking considering that we have African Americans and Hispanics holding positions in office, that are soilders, who care and are making a difference in this world. We,people of color, are just as hard working and deserve the respect as the next race. You open your mouth not for the town of Prescott, but you open your big mouth cuz in your heart and mind, your afraid. Your afraid cuz for the first time in your life, things are not going the “white” way. Not sure what the mural represents?? Allow me to enlighten you in one word: equal. I’m a strong hispanic mother Mr. Blair, born in Arizona, who will continue to fight and stand up to people like you. Trust me and mark my word sir, theirs plenty more like me.

For heaven’s sake, get a grip.

This was an idiotic series of remarks by a boneheaded politician and local talk host. Who was quickly fired by the radio station and will likely have to resign from the city council soon. What else would you like to have happen?

Whatever else one thinks of what’s going on in Arizona, there is no need to get so freaked out about this ridiculous incident. He’s off the radio, and he will be out of the council soon, and nobody will be sorry to see him go.

One would think Prescott residents were marching in the streets in support of Blair from the tone of this column, but nobody’s defending him at all that I’m aware of (indeed, it’s indefensible). So geeze — calm down.

“All Men are created equal”! The founders had it right, when attempting to form a perfect union and they also knew that they were not there yet but knew we one day would get there. Lincoln moved us forward as did JFK and LBJ. This Nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds. It was founded on the principle that all men are created equal, and that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.

It is my contention that this AZ law is not constitutional and will fail when challenged (unless, of course, they keep adding more amendments), pretty funny for this so called perfect law, that many internet blogs claim it was copied “Word for Word” from the Federal law, which I frankly do not believe, if it was then no amendments would have been made, right?, of course.

As for the undocumented workers, as was attributed to Ronald Reagan “It’s the Economy, Stupid”. When the economy is good we say let’s all celebrate “Cinco de Mayo, my brothers” but when the economy is down “it’s all your fault, you damn immigrant”. This too will pass. The real problem is the narcos, arms and people smugglers and that’s what the focus should be on.

Don’t you find it funny that no one ever voted for Brewer for Governor, it’s all about politics and getting elected, do not be fooled. Busy Brewer has passed S.B. 1070, no permit conceal weapons law, the famous Birthers law, banning Ethic studies law, (could she be behind the Mural in Prescott, Arizona) and if history is a lesson she should look up Arizona’s House Bill 2779 from two years ago (which failed when legally challenged) and the craziest one the boycotted Martin Luther King Day, not wanting another holiday, how crazy is that. I believe there is an undercurrent to their enactment of new laws, they real love following a distinct pattern. Poor Brewer, last week, she first she said her Dad had died in Germany fighting the Nazi in World War II (war ended 1945) and we find out her father was never in Germany and died in California in 1955 (watch the spin doctors go into overdrive) and then she went to Washington and came back empty as always, poor dear.
