Poll: Is Obama a Socialist? More Than Half of Likely Voters Think So

July 9, 2010

(ChattahBox)—It’s hard to know what to make of a new Democracy Corps poll showing that 55 percent of likely voters polled believe President Obama is a Socialist. Apparently, the right-wing tea party freak out over healthcare reform, with their constant attacks against Obama, as a Socialist, Communist, Marxist, Nazi and a host of other nonsensical invectives has made an impact on the public consciousness. What’s ironic is that Progressives are unhappy with Obama for not being liberal enough. But the Republican teapartiers are attacking the President as a wild-eyed radical Socialist. The reality is, Obama is a centrist at heart. So, why do a majority of voters believe the Fox News fueled nonsense? Reality and little things like empirical facts no longer matter in our political discourse, it seems.

The poll found that that 55 percent of likely voters believe the word “socialist” describes the president either “well” or “very well.”

Talking Points Memo asked Peyton Craighill, a senior associate at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, the pollster for Democracy Corps, to offer an explanation for the surprising results.

“It probably has to do with the fact that people are very unhappy with the dire economy and the fact that the budget deficit is quite large,” Craighill said. “People who don’t like the man are going to use any label they can to ding him, even if they don’t think he’s a socialist in the vein of the Soviet Union or China.”

Maybe, but people don’t seem to be doing any actual thinking of their own. The extremist Republican rhetoric and demagoguery that has now become commonplace, since Obama’s election has done a great disservice to our nation. And shame on them.

I can not believe that so many people buy this idea. Many people also believe that capitalism is the best way to run the country. What about DEMOCRACY? When did the general populace lose their minds. I would not believe most of the crap we are told. Why shouldn’t the little guy be helped? I don’t hear any of the “news media” complaining about CORPORATE WELFARE. That is the real problem in America! I can’t go to a doctor, but Goldman Sachs can get bailed out so their CEO can live in a mansion.

Yes, he is a socialist. And, based on my experiences in the UK, socialists are a nasty bunch.
Under the last decade of a Labour government in England, we have seen the people of our country suffer under the boot of Socialist policies.
We have suffered unfettered immigration, record levels of taxation and the most draconian use of State bullying and control of its citizens in the civilized world. There has been an obsession with ‘wealth distribution’ that has resulted in the honest tax-paying citizen being screwed for every last penny, while feckless lazy scumbags (drug users and long term unemployed) are lavished with social security benefits and free housing.
In the UK, true to form for all socialist governments, the general law abiding population are constantly lied to, bullied and disproportionately punished for the smallest misdemeanor. The lazy and feckless meanwhile are rewarded with taxpayer’s cash, because they are regarded as victims of a wicked Capitalistic system.
America beware. You have made a huge mistake in electing Obama. He has already begun to erode the values that built America with his dubious healthcare reforms. His rabid reaction to the BP oil spill has exposed him as a shallow and incompetent leader, whose Socialist instincts resulted in a counterproductive attack against what he sees as evil Capitalistic corporations.
    You have been warned.

These lily-white, suburban Glenn Beck clones only call Obama a “socialist” because they don’t have the balls to call him a “nigger.”

  9. Gary on August 13th, 2010 5:32 pm

That’s not what I was trying to say. I was criticizing him for is politics, not his race. People that call him a ‘nigger’ don’t suffer from a lack of ‘balls’, they are just ignorant racists.

Hey trevinjake love your punctuation. Did you learn grammar the same place you learned about politics? Thanks for illustrating what ignorance looks like.
