Park51 Protesters Rage Against Black New Yorker, Mistake Him for Muslim (Video)

August 23, 2010

(ChattahBox)—A loud and angry rally against the building of an Islamic community center in Lower Manhattan, took place in New York on Sunday, with a smaller counter-protest a short distance away. Protesters against the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” that isn’t a Mosque and isn’t at Ground Zero, carried incendiary signs comparing the Park51 center to terrorism and dripping, blood-red letters depicting Shariah law. And in a stark illustration of the blind hate and ignorance on display, a group of angry demonstrators quickly turned on a black New Yorker who had the misfortune to wander into the mob scene. They immediately assumed the dark-skinned man was a Muslim and verbally attacked him. We can thank Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin and Fox News for this violent hate that’s ready to explode into a raging inferno.

The protest against the Park 51 project in a former Burlington Coat Factory, two blocks away from the site of the 9/11 attacks, was organized by The Coalition to Honor Ground Zero, an extremist group promoting Islamophobia.

The NY Daily News provides a report on the angry protests:

“Opponents chanted “No mosque, no way!” and carried signs reading, “9-11-01: Never Forget,” as Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” blared over loudspeakers.”

“Supporters carried signs reading, “America! When did it become OK to be a bigot!” and screamed “Hallowed ground, that’s a lie!”‘

“One group brought a life-sized mock missile with a dummy terrorist draped over top holding a sign that read: “Obama, your middle-name is Hussain [sic], we understand. Bloomberg, what’s your excuse.”‘

As the anti-Islamic center protest reached a fevered pitch, a black resident wandered into the angry crowd and was immediately shouted at with accusations of being a Muslim. The man, described by Wonkette, as a carpenter working at Ground Zero, informed the mob he was not a Muslim, to no avail.

“You don’t even know my opinion. I’m not even Muslim. They didn’t ask my opinion They didn’t know who I was. I don’t want no trouble, wanted no trouble actually. Although I am not Muslim,” said the black carpenter.

Police officials eventually, escorted the man away from the crowd for his own safety.

What’s happening to our country? It’s getting ugly out there.
