Scarborough to GOP: Reject Hate, ‘Speak Out Against Newt Gingrich’ (Video)

August 23, 2010

(ChattahBox)—The ugly rhetoric and demagoguing by members of the Republican Party, especially Newt Gingrich, used in opposition to the New York Islamic center, was the main topic of conversation this morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Over the weekend, loud demonstrators took to the streets of Lower Manhattan to protest the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque,” displaying hate and incendiary signs, labeling the Park51 project a center for terrorists. Joe Scarborough urged his fellow Republicans, whom may not be his “brethren” for much longer, to reject the fearmongering and to denounce Newt Gingrich’s hate speech.

Joe Scarborough called the GOP’s populist demagoguery opposing the Park51 center two blocks from the site of 9/11, an embarrassment to the Party. To date, not a single Republican elected leader has come out against Gingrich’s comparison of Islam to Nazis.

“This is demagoguery of the first order. And the Republican Party–people in the Republican Party need to separate themselves from these voices. They need to separate themselves. And I talk to you my Republican brethren. I don’t know how much longer you’ll be my brethren, I’ll be honest. I’m looking for a conservative party that actually believes in small government and not engaging in Wilsonian wars. But that’s another discussion. I’m just talking to you now as a friend. I promise you this, you’re going to be embarrassed. You’re going to look back two, three, four years from now and this is going to be a dark blot on your record if you don’t speak out against Newt Gingrich and the voices of hate. Not on the right, because this has nothing to do with small government. There are demagogues on the left and on the right. This is an embarrassment and you need to speak out against it.”
