Jimmy Carter: Fox News, Glenn Beck ‘Have Deliberately Distorted the News’ (Video)

November 21, 2010

(ChattahBox Political News)—Former President Jimmy Carter took on the right-wing propaganda outlet Fox News and conspiracy theorist Glenn Beck, by stating the obvious. Fox News isn’t just a news network with a conservative slant. It’s a well-oiled propaganda operation that deliberately distorts and misrepresents the news to provide its viewers with an Orwellian right-wing reality, in which up is down and down is up. The facts no longer matter. Mindless partisan ideology trumps reality. And no matter what transgression committed by a conservative Republican, it’s either rationalized away or ignored.

Carter made his remarks during an appearance on CNN’s Reliable Sources with Howard Kurtz. The Reliable Sources host and Daily Beast writer referenced a passage in Carter’s book, “White House Diary” that was critical of the extremism of cable news.

Carter wrote in his book: “To gain viewers, the twenty-four news channels have now come to rely on reporting that often dramatizes or exaggerates each reported rumor or fact. In addition, the more radical presentations of information or commentary have proven to be most popular. So radio and television programs like political alignments have tended towards extremes.”

When asked to comment on the criticisms in his book, Carter lamented not only the right-wing extremism of Fox News and talk radio, but of the intent to deliberately misinform the public.

CARTER: Talk shows with Glenn Beck and others on Fox News, I think have deliberately distorted the news. And it’s become highly competitive. I have my Republican friends say MSNBC may be just as biased on the other side in support of the Democratic party the liberal element. But that’s part of a give and take. And I think CNN, more than others, have tried to play the middle to their detriment, as far as viewership is concerned and profits are concerned. So I think that describes more than my credentials warrant what I think…
