Air Force Blocks NY Times, Other Sites That Show WikiLeaks Files

December 15, 2010

(ChattahBox U.S. News)—Going even a step further than the Pentagon, the U.S. Air Force has blocked its employees from visiting the Web sites of the New York Times, the UK Guardian, and at least 23 other sites that have shared information from WikiLeaks, Reuters reports.

Air Force officials note that keeping staffers from accessing the sites is part of the organization’s routine blocking of sites that host “inappropriate materials or malware,” including classified information, Reuters notes.

The Pentagon prohibits employees from looking at WikiLeaks documents on the web, but thus far has not blocked access to sites that post the leaked cables, Reuters notes. The Pentagon’s rationale matches that of the Air Force—that employees should not be reviewing classified documents.
