Stewart to GOPers Blocking 9/11 Health Bill: ‘Absolute Travesty’ (Video)

December 17, 2010

(ChattahBox Political News)—Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart nailed it again last night in his ongoing campaign to fight for our 9/11 first responders, who are battling cancer, heart and lung problems and other ailments from breathing in the toxic fumes and dust at Ground Zero. This is the second time, in as many days that Stewart has championed for the first responders. For months, Democratic lawmakers have tried to get the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act passed that would provide $7.4 billion to take care of our 9/11 heroes. The bill is even paid for by closing tax loopholes awarded to foreign companies operating in the U.S. But the Republicans have continued to oppose it. Republicans attacked it as a “slush fund” susceptible to 9/11 scammers and fraudsters. Finally, the bill was passed through the House, after failing the first time. But every single Republican member in the Senate filibustered the bill. Why? Because they were holding the American people hostage until they secured their tax cuts for the rich. And they are also unhappy with closing off tax loopholes for their corporate buddies. As Stewart pointed out, this is outrageous and morally reprehensible behavior from a Party that has “turned 9/11 into a catch phrase” for political gain. Stewart also took aim at the three main television networks that have ignored the story. But Al Jazeera news managed to produce a 20-minute segment on the plight of the forgotten 9/11 first responders, now being screwed by heartless Republican Senators.

Stewart slammed Republican Senators for discarding 9/11 first responders as no longer politically expedient.

“Apparently the Party that turned 9/11 into a catch phrase are now moving suspiciously into a convenient pre-9/11 mentality when it comes to this bill,” said Stewart.

And he called the behavior of the Senate Republicans “an outrageous abdication of our responsibility to those who are most heroic on 9/11.”

It’s also inexplicable that the major networks have ignored the plight of the sick and dying first responders and the Senate Republicans’ role in denying them care.

“What’s more none of the three broadcast networks have mentioned any of this on the evening news cast for two-and-a-half-months, added Stewart.

In the second half of his show, he invited on four first responders who are all seriously ill from the effects of working in the toxic muck of Ground Zero.

They said they were disgusted and saddened by the attitude of Senate Republicans.

It’s indeed a disgrace.
