GOP Rep. Peter King to Restore McCarthyism Hearings on Muslim ‘Radicalization’

December 20, 2010

(ChattahBox Political News)—Right-wing big mouth Rep. Peter King (R-NY), who will soon take over as chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, is wasting no time putting his bigotry and Islamophobia to work in his new leadership role. The New York lawmaker, who views members of the Muslim faith as “an enemy living among us,” and who has called for the government to target Mosques, is proposing a McCarthy-like investigation into the “radicalization of the American Muslim community and homegrown terrorism.”

King announced his plans to investigate the Muslim community in a Newsday Op/Ed. In his screed, King falsely asserts that Muslim leaders are jeopardizing law enforcement efforts to ferret out radical members of the Islamic community.

“Federal and local law enforcement officials throughout the country told me they received little or – in most cases – no cooperation from Muslim leaders and imams,” wrote King.

King added, “I will do all I can to break down the wall of political correctness and drive the public debate on Islamic radicalization.”

King’s rhetoric doesn’t square with reality. Muslim leaders have been credited with thwarting attacks by radicals and have instituted outreach campaigns to Muslim youth.

“Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told POLITICO he fears the hearings will become a “witch hunt.” Any hearing King holds, Hooper said, “is just going to further marginalize American Muslims and demonize Islam.”’

“Hooper said that most American Muslims are “as patriotic as everyone else,” noting that potential attacks have been thwarted because of concerns expressed to law enforcement officials by Muslims about people in their own communities.”

King appeared on Fox News over the weekend to talk up his Muslim witch hunt. When asked if he was concerned that he would be viewed as a bigot, King responded he didn’t care and blamed opposition to his investigation of Muslims on political correctness.

“Yeah, it’s totally untrue. That’s political correct nonsense. But I’m willing to take that hit if I have to,” said King. He repeated his claims that Muslim leaders “are not cooperative” with law enforcement, adding “And I believe its important to have this investigation on radicalization of the Muslim community.”
