Anonymous Unloads on Koch Brothers: AFP First Casualty

February 28, 2011

(ChattahBox Technology News)—Fresh off of their retaliatory takedown of the security firm HBGary Federal, the group of Internet hacktivists known as Anonymous, have set their sights on a new victim to score some fresh “lulz.” Perhaps partly inspired by the ease in which a liberal blogger pranked Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) pretending to be his billionaire benefactor David Koch, revealing the union-buster guv as a bought and paid for corporate tool, the Anonymous hive-mind has issued a call to arms to go after the billionaire Koch brothers. The new operation dubbed “#OpWisconsin,” will fight back against the “insidious” efforts of the Koch brothers to “usurp American Democracy.” The Koch’s financial backing of Walker’s partisan union-busting in Wisconsin is the “final straw,” reads an Anonymous press release announcing the first stage of Internet warfare against the Koch brothers. True to their word, the website of the Koch-backed tea party front group, Americans for Prosperity was taken offline Sunday night, but is back in business as of this writing.

The entire world has been watching with horror, as the newly-elected Gov. Walker has decided to wage a right-wing ideological campaign to crush the collective bargaining rights of public unions, instead of to you know, actually lead and serve the people of Wisconsin.

Anonymous, more known for their free-wheeling anarchy and support of the type of no-holds-barred transparency promoted by WikiLeaks, have taken notice of the unholy union of the Koch brothers and the union-busting interests spearheaded by Walker. “Anonymous hears the voice of the downtrodden American people…, says the press release that also calls for a boycott of paper products manufactured by Koch Industries.

Read the full #OpWisconsin press release:

“Dear Citizens of the United States of America,

It has come to our attention that the brothers, David and Charles Koch–the billionaire owners of Koch Industries–have long attempted to usurp American Democracy. Their actions to undermine the legitimate political process in Wisconsin are the final straw. Starting today we fight back.

Koch Industries, and oligarchs like them, have most recently started to manipulate the political agenda in Wisconsin. Governor Walker’s union-busting budget plan contains a clause that went nearly un-noticed. This clause would allow the sale of publicly owned utility plants in Wisconsin to private parties (specifically, Koch Industries) at any price, no matter how low, without a public bidding process. The Koch’s have helped to fuel the unrest in Wisconsin and the drive behind the bill to eliminate the collective bargaining power of unions in a bid to gain a monopoly over the state’s power supplies.

The Koch brothers have made a science of fabricating ‘grassroots’ organizations and advertising campaigns to support them in an attempt to sway voters based on their falsehoods. Americans for Prosperity, Club for Growth and Citizens United are just a few of these organizations. In a world where corporate money has become the lifeblood of political influence, the labor unions are one of the few ways citizens have to fight against corporate greed. Anonymous cannot ignore the plight of the citizen-workers of Wisconsin, or the opportunity to fight for the people in America’s broken political system. For these reasons, we feel that the Koch brothers threaten the United States democratic system and, by extension, all freedom-loving individuals everywhere. As such, we have no choice but to spread the word of the Koch brothers’ political manipulation, their single-minded intent and the insidious truth of their actions in Wisconsin, for all to witness.

Anonymous hears the voice of the downtrodden American people, whose rights and liberties are being systematically removed one by one, even when their own government refuses to listen or worse – is complicit in these attacks. We are actively seeking vulnerabilities, but in the mean time we are calling for all supporters of true Democracy, and Freedom of The People, to boycott all Koch Industries’ paper products. We welcome unions across the globe to join us in this boycott to show that you will not allow big business to dictate your freedom.”

So, now that the Anonymous hive has managed to at least, temporarily take down the AFP website, who’s next? The spirited comments section discussing the lulz worthiness of #OpWisconsin, may provide a clue.

“Anonymous – 2011-02-26 23:06:04 Koch is pronounced “coke”. Scott Walker is a Koch Whore. There is potential for lulz here. Especially since Walker fell for prank phone call, proceeded to explain evil plans like a Bond villain for 20 minutes. seems like a lulzy target”

“Anonymous – 2011-02-26 10:59:26 Exactly. I bet that there is quite a lot of interesting information to be found on the servers and personal computers of Gov. Walker and both Koch brothers.”

And so it begins, lulz aplenty.

I read recently that one of the Koch Brothers has stated that they are not trying to influence politics in America. I believe this about much as I believe that Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are real (not at all.) This is pure CYA on the part of the Kochs. I remember reading a NY Times article last year in which it was revealed that the Koch Bros. are afraid of the public knowing that they are behind these rw organizations like AFP, CFG, and CU because it would hurt them economically. IMHO, they should have thought about this before they began using them as fronts to subvert democracy.

I hope that Anonymous is successful in making the name Koch a household name. I remember when President Obama mentioned the names of some of these organizations at his first address to a joint session of Congress in 2009, the Koch Bros., the heads of these organizations, and their minions in Congress were NOT pleased and tried to discredit the president and make it seem as if he was deliberately “picking” on them instead of engaging in a bit of truth telling. I will be making a contribution to Anonymous to help the group expose the Kochs and all of the others who are buying politicians’ votes. The public needs to know about these very influential individuals and the tactics they are using to destroy our democracy.

    Hey Majii:

It’s a sad commentary isn’t it, that we must depend on a group of Anonymous hacktivists to safeguard our democracy from evil oligarchs? It also shows how pathetic our 21st century mainstream media has become. It took a prank phone call from a liberal blogger pretending to be David Koch to really draw attention to the fact that Gov. Scott Walker is a corporate tool, bought and paid for by the Koch brothers.
