Right-Wing Takeover of Democracy in Michigan: ‘Financial Martial Law’

March 11, 2011

(ChattahBox Political News)—You think union-busting is bad? Wait until you hear what Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) has in store. In an unprecedented power grab, Snyder is advocating legislation that would allow him to take over control of local governments and school districts and fire elected officials. Residents would have no say over what happens in their towns and schools. And a private corporate entity would control everything. In other words, Snyder’s plan would end democracy as we know it in Michigan. Welcome to the right-wing’s dystopia, or to put it another way, plutocratic hell. Are the voters of Michigan experiencing buyer’s remorse yet?

Besides the obvious power grab to set himself up as King of the World or at least Michigan, Snyder is also using his “Financial Martial Law” plan to punish communities that refuse to dismantle public worker unions.

The Michigan Messenger writes:

“In a party line vote, and despite impassioned speeches of protest by the body’s Democratic minority, the Michigan Senate approved legislation that threatens to take over and even dissolve local governments that refuse to balance their budgets by breaking labor contracts.

According to the law, which has already been approved in the House, the governor will be able to declare “financial emergency” in towns or school districts and appoint someone to fire local elected officials, break contracts, seize and sell assets, and eliminate services.”

Emergency financial managers would be appointed to take draconian steps, answering only to the governor. In other words the EFMs would act as de facto dictators.

Michigan state Sen. Jack Brandenburg (R) referred to the state takeovers, as “financial martial law,” as he scorned local control.

But Democratic Sen. Steve Bieda sounded the alarm on Snyder’s trashing of our cherished democracy.

““I am very concerned for the powers this legislation would transfer to an emergency manager. Removing elected officials and overturning local ordinances shows no respect for the will or the rights of the voters. This draconian measure gives authority to an individual with no responsibility to the citizens of the community,” Bieda said in a statement.

The corporatization of America is here.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow reported on Governor Snyder’s power grab this week, pointing out “that it’s not about the budget,” it’s about power.

This is not a right-wing takeover of democracy. As a charter member of the vast right wing conspiracy, I find it repulsive that anyone would be able to fire elected officials other than the people who elected them in the first place. I can’t believe I find myself siding with Democrats, but, in this case, I must.
