Newt Gingrich Vs. Newt Gingrich on Libya

March 23, 2011

(ChattahBox Political News)— What a difference 16-days makes. Winter turned to spring. And disgraced former Speaker and serial adulterer Newt Gingrich completely flip-flopped on his policy regarding U.S. military intervention in Libya. A little more than two-weeks ago, presidential hopeful Gingrich was all for going into Libya with guns blazing to “get rid of” strongman Col. Muammar Gaddafi. On March 7, Newt declared, “Exercise a no-fly zone this evening.” But that was back when President Obama was resisting calls for a no-fly zone, until a resolution could be secured from the United Nations Security Council. With a resolution in hand, and a coalition of our allied partners formed, U.S. fighter jets carried out air strikes over Libya. But now that the no-fly zone is fully underway, Newt has changed his mind, because if Obama is doing something, then that means Newt must immediately react in a knee-jerk fashion and take the opposite view. This is the cardinal rule of Obama derangement syndrome. The fact that it makes Gingrich look like an utter fool, is besides the point.

Think Progress has the Newt Gingrich take-down, and it’s fierce. “Earlier this month, former Speaker of the House and current presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich was hammering President Obama for not intervening in Libya,” writes Think Progress’ George Zornick. But “Now that Obama has initiated a no-fly zone over Libya, Gingrich has completely reversed his position with no apparent explanation,” added Zornick.

During an appearance on Fox News’ On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, Gingrich ran off the mouth, and he called Obama “inept” for not immediately invading Libya.

GINGRICH: Exercise a no-fly zone this evening, communicate to the Libyan military that Gadhafi was gone and that the sooner they switch sides, the more like they were to survive, provided help to the rebels to replace him. I mean, the idea that we’re confused about a man who has been an anti-American dictator since 1969 just tells you how inept this administration is. They were very quick to jump on Mubarak, who was their ally for 30 years, and they were confused about getting rid of Gadhafi. This is a moment to get rid of him. Do it. Get it over with.

Got that? Do it now. Get rid of Gaddafi. And regarding NATO and the UN, Gingrich said we don’t need no stinkin’ permission.

GINGRICH : The United States doesn’t need anybody’s permission. We don’t need to have NATO, who frankly, won’t bring much to the fight. We don’t need to have the United Nations. All we have to say is that we think that slaughtering your own citizens is unacceptable and that we’re intervening. And we don’t have to send troops. All we have to do is suppress his air force, which we could do in minutes.

Well, that was then, and this is now.

This morning, while appearing on the Today Show with co-host Matt Lauer, Gingrich pulled a complete 180, declaring “I would not have intervened.” And Lauer just let Newt ramble on and didn’t challenge him.

It’s quite the turnaround. And how anything Gingrich says these days is taken seriously, is a mystery. But our political discourse is becoming increasingly ridiculous.

What makes Newt look like an utter fool is that he is Newt. His mother turned him into a Newt, and he *didn’t* get better.
