Pelosi: GOP Waging ‘War on Women’ With ‘Ideological Old Style Agenda’

April 7, 2011

(ChattahBox Political News)—- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) issued a call to action to fight back against the Republicans’ “war on women.” From anti-abortion measures, restricting access to birth control, restricting access to reproductive health care, and defunding programs that provide education, nutrition and health services to needy children, the GOP is waging an ideological war on women and families. Speaking before an event hosted by the Feminist Majority Foundation, an organization “dedicated to women’s equality, reproductive health, and non-violence,” Pelosi said “We have to create a drumbeat across America,” to fight against the “ideological old style agenda of the Republicans.”

Many of the budget cuts and social wedge riders attached to the House Republicans’ draconian 2011 budget, decimate programs for women and children, and roll back the rights of women to make their own reproductive choices.

Eleanor Smeal, President of the Feminist Majority, writes on the group’s website that GOP policies show “contempt for women.

“House Republicans are revealing that their utter contempt for women’s programs and their lack of concern for children in these inhumane so-called budget cuts. Every dollar for family planning saves an estimated four dollars of unplanned governmental spending. If you are not going to spend money on family planning, on children’s education, adequate food and nutrition for poor and pregnant women, you will spend more money on health care and prison programs,” writes Smeal.

Pelosi couldn’t agree more.

CNN reports:

“There is actually a war on women,” the minority leader told several hundred activists attending the Women Money Power Summit sponsored by the Feminist Majority Foundation. “Abortion is one issue but contraception and family planning and birth control are opposed by this crowd too. Understand what is at risk here,” Pelosi said, referring to proposals promoted by the new House Republican leadership.”

Pelosi added that the Republican proposal floated by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), to end Medicare as we know it would put women’s health at risk.

“This is not reform. This is the same old ideological turn back the clock for women- end Medicare, end Medicare. Are you ready for that?” Pelosi asked the crowd.

If the Republicans have their way, they will roll back women’s rights and New Deal reforms and take us back to the 19th century. It’s truly frightening.
