Poll: It’s the Economy Stupid, Economic Angst Killing Obama’s Numbers

April 19, 2011

(ChattahBox Political News)—The unemployment rate stands at 8.8 percent. Unemployment benefits and other social safety net programs, are either running out or being eliminated by Republicans on a slash and burn budget-cutting binge. And to add to the desperation of already cash-strapped families, the price of gas has soared to over $4.00 per gallon in many parts of the country. Times are hard. Americans are frightened for their futures. So, they are laying the blame on the guy in charge. The latest Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that President Obama’s poll numbers are dipping to an historic low. And increasing numbers of Americans believe the economy is worsening, despite signs that it’s recovering, albeit more slowly than needed.

The Washington Post writes:

“In the survey, 47 percent approve of the job Obama is doing, down seven points since January. Half of all Americans disapprove of his job performance, with 37 percent saying they “strongly disapprove,” nearly matching the worst level of his presidency.”

A whopping 44 percent of those polled are experiencing no economic relief and believe our economy is tanking. Yes, our economy is improving, but not for the poor and the middle class. Wall Street and the super rich are gobbling up all of the economic recovery for themselves.

When it comes to Obama’s handling of the economy, a clear majority of 57 percent of Americans are not happy with his job performance. Independents, those voters that often decide a presidential election, give a big thumbs down to Obama’s economic leadership.

The one bright spot? The Republican presidential field is so weak, President Obama would handily beat them all, even with a bad economy and the country in a sour mood. The poll found that a majority of Republican voters are not sold on the current crop of GOP contenders.
