Kofi Annan and Jimmy Carter Refused Entry in Zimbabwe

November 22, 2008

Mugabe, the Zimbabwe President Harrare, Zimbabwe (ChattahBox) — Former US President Jimmy Carter and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan have postponed their trip to Zimbabwe as Zimbabwe government denied their entry in the country. Both the diplomats were planning to visit the country with a high level delegation on a humanitarian mission. “We had to cancel our visit because the government made it very clear that it will not co-operate,” said Annan while speaking at a news conference in South Africa.

Annan and Carter were planning to travel with Grace Machel, former President of South Africa and wife of Nelson Mandela. She had set up The Elders in 2007 to tackle global problems. She is also an advocate of women’s and children’s rights. The Elders planned to assess country’s situation for humanitarian needs as the condition of the people is stalked by disease and hunger. On the other hand, the political situation is worse at the hands of the politicians in the country.

Carter said that he was very disappointed that the government would not cooperate and permit them to enter the country. This is the first time that the former US President and 2002 Nobel Peace Laureate has been denied permission in any country.

Annan also commented that the group did not need any “red carpet treatment” but only government’s permission to help the poor and the desperate. The State owned daily news paper – The Herald – reported that the three were trying to boost the opposition party in the country, the Movement for  Democratic Change, in power sharing talks with the President Robert Mugabe.
