Conjoined Twin Dies In UK Hospital

December 3, 2008

England (Chattahbox) One of the conjoined twin newborns born to Laura Williams in London, England last month has died after undergoing an emergency surgery to separate the babies. Hope Williams was only a week old when the separation was attempted, and despite having only a shared liver with her sister Faith, a both girls having their own hearts, the stress of the operation was too much for the infant’s lungs.

“This was an emergency operation because there was a blockage in their joined intestine which could only be resolved through separation,” said Professor Agostino Pierro of London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. “The technical separation worked well, although it was extremely challenging, and went according to plan.”

When asked for further comment, Professor Pierro admitted it had been the most difficult operation he had ever been asked to perform.

“We separated the babies and unfortunately, after separation of the babies, Hope’s lungs were too small to support her breathing and circulation. So eventually she died because of a lung condition and in reality what happened before is that the lungs of Faith were somehow supporting Hope,” he sadly explained.

Both parents were present at the hospital during the operation and death, and are grieving over the loss of their child, although coping well for the sake of their other daughter, week-old Faith who is said to be needing further surgery to close her stomach. She remains in the Intensive Care Unit under observation, but it is believed she will make a full recovery.
