Rice Arrives in New Delhi in Wake of Mumbai Attacks

New Delhi, India (ChattahBox) — The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, arrived in New Delhi today to ease tension with Pakistan. She will meet the top Indian leaders regarding the tensions between the two nations arising out of the attacks on Mumbai. The US officials have pointed out links of the attack to Pakistan-based terrorist group and have urged Pakistan to give “total and complete” support to the investigations. The US has also pressured Islamabad to opt for complete transparency in the matter.

Rice is visiting India at the request of President George Bush to demonstrate the United States’ stand in solidarity with the people of India and to hold the extremists accountable for their heinous deeds. She had been attending NATO meeting on Tuesday but had been constantly in contact with the foreign ministers of Pakistan and India after the terrorist carnage in Mumbai. She has also briefed President-elect Barack Obama about the her plans to travel to India.

The U.S. State Department said on Friday five Americans were killed in the attacks in which gunmen attacked Mumbai’s top luxury hotels, its biggest railway station, a Jewish center, and several other sites in India’s financial capital. President Bush has already directed the federal agencies in the US as well as the State and the Defense Department to devote necessary resources and personnel to this situation.
