Men Charged In Mass Child Porn Ring

December 11, 2008

Australia (ChattaBox) – Australian officials have arrested 19 men in 70 countries for participation in a massive child pornography ring.

A tip off from Brazilian police led to the identification of 200 people who had been sharing material through a peer-to-peer network featuring the sexual and physical abuse of children as young as 12 months old, some for hours at a time. So far over 515,000 files have been seized, with more expected.

“These are some of the worst images, I must say, that the Federal Police have ever seen,” said Andrew Colvin, Deputy Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police.

While it isn’t clear where all the children are from, and identifying them all may be impossible, several seem to be from Eastern Europe, and North and South America. Two have been taken into protective custody, and the authorities are hoping to have removed several more by the end of this ordeal from the abusive conditions they are living in.

The 19 men who have so far been arrested caused shock as it was revealed the group contained prominent members of the community, including a senior lawyer, a police officer, and horrifyingly, a child protection worker.

If convicted they could face up to 10 years for possession of child pornography.
