Chinese Develop Anti-Ship Ballistic “Kill” Missile: A Tangible Threat to U.S. Ships

April 1, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The U.S. Navy is viewing the news of a new Chinese “kill,” anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM), which can destroy U.S. naval carriers and has a long range of 2000 km, as a tangible threat. Navy officials first obtained concrete evidence of such a missile, long suspected, when details of the new weapon were posted on a Chinese blog. The missile is fitted with a massive warhead capable of destroying a U.S. carrier in one precise strike.

This disturbing news comes as U.S. Naval ships patrolling in international areas of the South China Sea have been engaged of late, in tension-filled encounters with the Chinese Navy. China is becoming more aggressive in defending territorial claims in areas, which are recognized as international waters, by engaging in aggressive and harassing maneuvers towards U.S. ships in routine operations. Now, with this news of a Chinese anti-ship weapon, tensions will only increase, and present a real danger to U.S. ships and crewmen.

U.S. Navy officials believe the missile is a modified Dong Feng 21, having a complex guidance system, a low radar signature and an unpredictable path, making it difficult for ships to evade. The missile can travel at mach 10 and reach its maximum range of 2000 km in less than 12 minutes. The U.S. perceives the missile’s range as a direct threat, because it can reach U.S. ships in international waters.

The Chinese missile is said to be supported by a sophisticated network of satellites, radar and unmanned aerial vehicles, which can locate moving U.S. ships and target them with a kill shot. The Chinese missile, if it does exist, would be the first ballistic missile used to attack ships at sea.

U.S. ships are not presently equipped to defend against a ballistic missile attack, but that is about to change.
