Somali Pirates Attack Another U.S. Ship – But Fail to Capture

April 15, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Somali Pirates were back at it again this time targeting another American ship carrying humanitarian aid in the Gulf of Aden. The attack off the coast of Somalia is the fifth attack on a commercial vessel since the US Navy’s rescue of captured freighter captain Phillips.

Pirates this time fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at the MV Liberty Sun, which conducted evasive manoeuvres to fend off the pirates until emergency help arrived via the destroyer USS Bainbridge about five hours later.  The pirate vessel fled before the Navy ship could engage.

The  vessel suffered some damage but the  20 American crew members were said to be unharmed and the MV Liberty Sun, is now reportedly heading to Kenya with a US Navy escort. The Liberty Sun, which set off from Houston, had already delivered thousands of tons of food aid to a port in Sudan and was en route to deliver more aid to Mombasa.

The Bainbridge is the ship from which US Navy snipers killed three pirates who were holding Richard Phillips, the captain of the freighter Maersk Alabama, on board a drifting lifeboat. Phillips, who is now due to return to America, was on board the Bainbridge when it arrived to help the Liberty Sun. It is unclear when the heroic captain would be able to return to the United States. The Bainbridge does not carry helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft.

I don’t think the situation will change much until Somalia has a stable government. Until then we will continue to see attacks on ships. I offer a little more on this on my blog at:

The situation will change drastically when the UN authorizes the various national navies to shoot on sight anyone in the general area not flying naval colors, and carrying automatic weapons. In the meantime, Osprey and helicopter patrols should be guiding fast attack ships to small boats and suspected pirate motherships for boarding and inspection.

It is quite ironic that in today’s society Priates are “voodoo” when the United States have been using Pirates since BEFORE World War One.
Dont get me wrong, the Somolian Pirates are extremely wrong in over taking so many ship and keeping hundreds of people hostage. They need to be put out of business, the crew of the ships that have to be in the surrounding waters should be armed with weapons, the do need to be able to protect themselves, considering any other help is so far away.
But people NEED to do some basic research and see the TRUE history of the United States and priates.
