Pregnant Prisoner Could Face Death After Smuggling Arrest in Laos

May 4, 2009

Laos (ChattahBox) – A pregnant British woman is facing a possible death sentence after being caught smuggling 1.5 pounds of heroine out of Laos.

Samantha Orobator has been held in the Laos prison since early September, and has only just been granted legal representation. Human rights lawyer Anna Morris has flown in to be present at the beginning of the trial, which she says Laos officials have moved up in an attempt to stop Orobator from receiving representation.

Orobator became pregnant in prison, although it is not clear what the circumstance behind the conception were. Fears over her living conditions, as well as her health requirements not being met during her pregnancy, are very real.

“We are concerned about her healthcare standards, we are concerned about her nutrition, we are concerned about her lack of pre-natal care. This is a vulnerable young woman with child so we are extremely concerned about the lack of access that anyone has had,” Morris said.
β€œIt’s simply not acceptable to allow this young woman to be without a lawyer and then to move the trial to a time she is not certain of and before her British lawyers and consular representatives have a chance to see her.”

If convicted, Orobator could be sentenced to death-by-firing squad. She is due to give birth in September.
