Tasmanian Devil Tumor Disease Wiping Out Population

May 23, 2009

Australia (ChattahBox) – A deadly cancer is quickly spreading through the Tasmanian Devil community, killing off greater numbers then ever before, and threatening extinction.

According to scientists who have kept tabs on the phenomenon, Devil Facial Tumor Disease seems to be spreading more rapidly amount the Tasmanian Devil population, decreasing it by nearly 70% in the past five years alone.

“If things go the way they are, we may see extinction in the next 20 to 40 years in the wild,” the Devil Facial Tumor Disease Program said in a recent statement.

The disease causes raw, painful tumors and legion in the mouth and cheek, that quickly spread upwards to the eyes. Though a cancer, there seems to be a strange, contagious element to it, making it similar to only a handful of other cancers that have been found to spread the same way.
