China Orders New Censoring Programs Installed On Computers

June 8, 2009

China (ChattahBox) – According to an expose by UK based newspaper The Telegraph, China has ordered that all computers sold after July 1st come with a software program that censors the Internet automatically.  PC makers will be required to pre-install the Web site-blocking program or offer it on a CD-ROM included with all PCs sold in China after the deadline date, according to a translation of a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology notification seen by IDG News Service.

The software, named Green Dam, is supposedly meant to censor pornography from being easily accessed within the country. But critics believe that it will be used to monitor and control citizens who may be using the web as a way of protesting the Communist nation, and speaking to others outside of China.

There will also be a program called Youth Escort, which will filter any words deemed inappropriate by the government.

According to sources, the program will also offer a way to transmit personal information, though the process has not been clarified.
