Ayatollah Orders Probe Of Iran Election to Take the Heat Off?

June 15, 2009

(ChattahBox) — In a stunning reversal Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered an investigation into allegations of election fraud.  State television quoted the country’s most powerful figure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday directing a high-level clerical panel, the Guardian Council, to look into charges by pro-reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, who has said he is the rightful winner of Friday’s presidential election.

The decision comes after Mousavi wrote a letter appealing to the Guardian Council and met Sunday with Khamenei, who holds almost limitless power over Iranian affairs. Such an election probe by the 12-member council is uncharted territory, and it is not immediately clear how it would proceed or how long it would take.

Leaked election results, whose authenticity remains unclear, showed Mousavi the “clear victor” in last week’s Iranian elections, despite the fact that government-released results showed incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with a 2-1 margin, the Telegraph reported Sunday.     The statistics, circulated on Iranian blogs and websites, claimed Mr Mousavi had won 19.1 million votes while Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won only 5.7 million.  The two other candidates, reformist Mehdi Karoubi and hardliner Mohsen Rezai, won 13.4 million and 3.7 million respectively.

The recount is seen by many as an attempt to mollify irate Iranians taking to the streets to protest the election results. It’s doubtful if there will now be a stunning reversal, which would admit the original vote count was tainted. But the Ayatollah and his fellow mullahs use the president and the assembly to give the illusion of participatory democracy while in reality a panel of theocrats make all the decisions. If they come to believe removing Ahmadinejad is the only way to take the heat off they would probably call for a runoff with Mousavi to placate the flock.

    Mehdi Karoubi 13.4 million!!! funny!
Karoubi had almost devoted his votes to Mousavi by presenting in Mousavi’s second ad film and supporting him there. Every one who lives in Iran knew that the two most probable ones were Ahmadinejad and Mousavi.
