North Korea heading toward provoking war?

June 18, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Unwilling to be ignored, desperate North Korea is seemingly raising the level of provocation to a situation that threatens war.  Two recent developments have raised tensions that could spiral out of control very quickly.  As we reported earlier a Japanese newspaper reported that the anticipated North Korean missile test expected as early as next month might involve a launch toward Hawaii. Apparently confirming that the concern is real, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he has ordered the deployment of a new missile defense system and a sophisticated tracking radar to respond to any North Korean missile launch that threatens Hawaii. It should be noted that even if that is North Korea’s intention their missile technology in previous tests has not come close to achieving that kind of distance (7,000 kilometers).  But even so if the missile was fired on that heading no telling what might happen.

Meanwhile the U.S. Navy is reportedly monitoring a North Korean ship at sea under the new U.N. sanctions that bar Pyongyang from exporting weapons.  North Korea has spouted loudly that stopping one of their ships would be considered an act of war. Even so the U.S. Navy is prepared to try to stop or escort to shore the North Korean ship called the Kang Nam, which is suspected of carrying weapons banned by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1874.

What happens next is hard to say in either of these potential incidents.  If North Korea is really aching or sees no way out but war, they could just start a border skirmish with South Korea but haven’t yet.  So for now it seems like this is still a game of chicken with North Korea pushing toward a collision, hoping the US blinks and swerves out of the way.  I don’t see that happening.  And if North Korea is cut off from shipping arms they lose their last source of significant income besides handouts from China.  I hope I am wrong but I think that puts the regime and military in a situation of getting starved out, going to war, or putting their tails between their collective legs and abandoning their nuclear weapons program.  It seems the western world is gambling that North Korea, will eventually choose the later.  I fear given we are dealing with Kim Jong Il, that will not be the case.

Bear, I think you are right. And I think sending in enough troops to execute Kim Jong Il is the best possible answer; it will hurt the North Koren people a lot less than a nuclear surgical strike would, and that’s the only other possible answer.
