Israeli Soldiers Anonymously Speak Out On Gaza Violations

July 15, 2009

Israel (ChattahBox) – A human rights group has come forward with anonymous testimony from Israeli soldiers who took part in the occupation of Gaza, with story they say confirm severe human right’s violations.

Breaking The Silence is a group run by Israeli veterans, and works to back up claims by Gaza citizens who say they were brutalized and violated by soldiers during the fight against Hamas in January of this year.

Claims of starving children sitting by the bodies of parents, people being used as human shields by Israeli troops, and other violations have been made by human right’s groups before, as well as by the people of Gaza themselves.

But Israel’s claims that these were all made as a part of the propaganda released by Hamas is likely going to look thin now that it is soldiers within their own army making the allegations, the BBC reports.

Here is one report made by an unnamed soldier:

“Fire power was insane. We went in and the booms were just mad. The minute we got to our starting line, we simply began to fire at suspect places. You see a house, a window, shoot at the window. You don’t see a terrorist there? Fire at the window. In urban warfare, anyone is your enemy. No innocents.”

Breaking the Silence is an EU funded group that has a history of speaking to soldiers about their experiences in times of war. They are well known for breaking stories on unlawful actions committed from within the military.
