India and Pakistan Take Small Peace Step with Intelligence Sharing

July 16, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Nuclear powers India and Pakistan have taken a small but significant step toward peace. The unfriendly neighbors who have fought three wars against each other, mostly over the disputed Himalayan province of Kashmir, have agreed to cooperate on fighting terrorism and continue talking.
Both countries acknowledging that terrorism was the main threat to their respective nations instead of each other, which is a substantial breakthrough.

The prime ministers of India and Pakistan meet for the first time since the attacks on Mumbai, India, by Pakistan-based militants last year that left 170 people dead.  November’s attack on Mumbai stalled a fragile peace process, launched in 2004, which was aimed at resolving a number of issues, including Kashmir. The two spoke for almost two hours on the sidelines of the ongoing Non-Aligned Movement summit at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. During the talks, India’s prime minister Manmohan Singh reiterated his demand to “bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice before real peace can be achieved.

Pakistan’s prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani pledged to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice, and the two countries agreed to share real-time intelligence on terrorist threats with India, according to a joint statement released by the two prime ministers.

Another meeting is scheduled to take place between top foreign officials of both countries during the United Nations General Assembly in September.
