Jewel Heist Mastermind Caught With Diamonds Again, Says They Are His

July 21, 2009

Italy (ChattahBox) – Leonardo Notarbartolo, the man known as the mastermind behind what was arguably the largest diamond theft in history, has been arrested once again after Milan police found him with more than two pounds of rough diamonds in his BMW.  Notarbartolo was originally arrested for heading a ring of Italian thieves In February 2003. They were accused of breaking into a vault two floors beneath the Antwerp Diamond Center and making off with at least $100 million worth of loose diamonds, gold, jewelry, and other spoils. The vault was thought to be impenetrable. It was protected by 10 layers of security, and state of the art security and  a lock with 100 million possible combinations. The robbery was called the heist of the century, and even now the police can’t explain exactly how it was done.

Notarbartolo has claimed to Wired writer Joshua Davis that the stones are his, and that he bought them legitimately. He says that they are industrial grade, and so only cost him 10,000 euros.

Italian police say they aren’t buying it, and it’s understandable why, given Notarbartolo’s history. However, that doesn’t mean he won’t get away with the alleged crime, even if he did do it.

“To say with certainty that any rough diamond is the same rough diamond that was in a vault six years go is almost impossible,” Davis was quoted as saying.

But he might not just get away with it if it does turn out that the diamonds were stolen. He may actually get them back. Davis continues:

“I don’t understand the Italian legal system, of course, but speaking on purely logical grounds, if you can’t prove that the diamonds are stolen, then you would logically have to give them back.”
