July 22, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed concerns Wednesday that North Korea could be sharing nuclear technology with fellow rogue nation Myanmar.  At a news conference after arriving in the Thai capital of Bangkok, Clinton told reporters that the Obama administration is aware of growing concerns in Asia about North Korean military ties to Myanmar, which borders Thailand and is run by a military regime.  The recent aborted voyage of a North Korean ship, Kang Nam I, which headed toward Myanmar with undisclosed cargo suspected to be military arms. Shadowed by the U.S. Navy, it reversed course and returned home earlier this month.  Suspicions are high that North Korea is helping Myanmar set up uranium- and nuclear-related facilities.

Ms. Clinton also expressed concerns over human right violations and the unfair trial of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Clinton is holding talks with senior Thai officials before flying to the resort city of Phuket on Wednesday to attend an international meeting on regional security. Myanmar and North Korea are expected to be major topics of discussion at the meeting.
