3rd Jakarta hotel bomb was set to explode first to kill many more people

July 24, 2009

JAKARTA, Indonesia (ChattahBox) – The coordinated suicide bombing in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta that targeted visiting international businessmen and killed nine people at the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels, likely would have been far more deadly had a planted third bomb with a timer not malfunctioned.

Two days before the explosions, the suicide bombers checked into room 1808 of the Marriott, where the unexploded bomb was found and defused, police said. The unexploded device was a laptop filled with explosives and bolts, placed on the 18th floor of the J.W. Marriott hotel and should have gone off first, said Ketut Untung Yoga of the national police. The explosion would likely have sent panicked crowds fleeing to the ground floors, where the two suicide attackers detonated their explosives packs.

The al-Qaeda-linked group, Jemaah Islamiyah was blamed for the attack in 2003 and seems to be a main suspect in this attack.  An unknown number of suspects have been picked up in a nationwide manhunt that is also targeting Malaysian fugitive Noordin Mohammed Top, the alleged mastermind of four major bombings in Indonesia and the suspected leader of a small splinter group of the militant Jemaah Islamiyah.
