Rare Clouded Leopard Found In Bangladesh

July 24, 2009

Bangladesh (ChattahBox) – A rare leopard cub has been discovered in a remote village, more than two decades after it’s kind was thought to be extinct.

The clouded leopard’s numbers began dwindling drastically almost fifty year ago, until twenty years ago when ti was believed the last died out.

But villagers came across three, including a mother and her two cubs, earlier this week. The mother and one cub escaped capture, but the second, a 3 month old, was not so lucky.

Originally, the villagers had planned to sell the creature. It wasn’t until conservationists arrived that they were convinced to release it back into it’s natural habitat.

“We are delighted. For many years now, we had thought this animal was gone or was going. It’s good to know that they are still there and that they are breeding,” Wildlife Trust of Bangladesh member, Professor Anwarul Islam, was quoted by The Independent.
