Venezuela freezes relations with Colombia

July 29, 2009

(ChattahBox) — President Hugo Chavez in a televised announcement has recalled his ambassador and frozen diplomatic relations with neighboring Colombia after they called him out for allegedly providing weapons to rebels. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said it had captured anti-tank rocket launchers from FARC Marxist guerillas, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Latin America’s oldest and largest insurgency, that had been produced in Sweden and sold to Venezuela. In addition Uribe said the guerrillas were trying to buy anti-aircraft missiles.
Colombia’s recent announcement that it had agreed to a new pact with the United States to allow it to use military bases to conduct anti-drug operations had already raised tensions between the two neighbors who do billions of dollars in trade each year. The US says it needs the bases because Ecuador has ordered the closing of a U.S. installation, but Chavez fears they will be used to attack his country.
