Australia thwarts terrorist plot to attack army base

(ChattahBox) — A terrorist plot has reportedly been averted in Australia with four Australian men linked to a group with al Qaeda ties arrested. The men of Somali and Lebanese descent are accused of planning a suicide attack on the Holsworthy army base in Sydney. More than 400 officers were involved in searching on 19 properties in Melbourne, Australia’s second largest city, during the bust. The four men are accused of involvement with al-Shabab, the insurgent movement in Somalia. The men allegedly planned to use with automatic weapons to fire on personnel and bystanders until they themselves were either killed or taken into custody. Police are also interviewing a fifth man, who was already in police custody in relation to other offenses. The raid was the product of seven months of surveillance.
