Saudi King Abdullah Calls For Palestinian Unity For State in Scolding Letter

August 7, 2009

Saudi Arabia (ChattahBox) – Saudi King Abdullah has reportedly sent a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (photo left), telling him that in order for there to be a Palestinian state they must first first unite all factions.  The open letter from king Abdullah addressed to Abbas, published in Al-Hayat had a rather scolding tone.

“”I can honestly tell you, brothers, that even if the whole world joins to found a Palestinian independent state, and if we have full support for that, this state would not be established as long as the Palestinians are divided,” the letter, which was released through SPA.

“The arrogant and criminal enemy was not able, during years of continued aggression, to hurt the Palestinian cause as much as the Palestinians hurt their cause themselves in the past few months.”

The letter comes as inter-party divisions within Fatah, along with the ongoing dispute with Hamas has reduced this weeks gathering of the Fatah congress (the first in many years), which should have been a prime event for advancing the cause of Palestinian statehood, instead has been a side-show of disunity of the Palestinian leadership. No official response from President Abbas has been announced.
