Report: Another Pakistan Taliban leader Wounded or Killed in Gunfight with Rival For Leadership

August 8, 2009

(ChattahBox) — The Taliban in Pakistan may have made the war against them a little easier as two potential successors to Baitullah Mehsud, have engaged in a gun battle, perhaps killing one or both. The reported gun battle occurred during a meeting to choose Baitullah Mehsud’s successor.  Baitullah Mehsud who was considered Pakistan’s No. 1 terrorist threat, was reportedly killed along with his wife and bodyguards by a US drone missile attack on Wednesday.

Pakistani news channels were carrying unconfirmed reports that during the “shura” council an armed clash occurred between two groups with Hakimullah Mehsud spokesman of the umbrella group Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) wounded or killed, perhaps by rival Wali Ur Rehman Mehsud, who may have also been killed in the gunfight.  Analysts see the death of Baitullah Mehsud as a major blow to the TTP as its division into splinter groups now seems even more imminent.
