August 10, 2009

Taiwan (ChattahBox) – The number of missing in a southern village of Taiwan may be as high as 600, a local man has claimed.  Typhoon Morakot hit the small village, causing a mudslide that covered the majority of the village.

One hundred people have reportedly been rescued, but hundreds more are still missing, and officials are not convinced of the exact number.

But a local man who was rescued after the event has said it is much higher than officials think. According to Lin Chien-chung, 600 people are still missing from the village.

“The mudslide covered a large part of the village, including a primary school and many homes. A part of the mountain above us just fell on the village,” he was quoted by The Huffington Post.

Typhoon Morakot the ninth typhoon of the Pacific cyclone season, has also hit the Philippines, where it left 14 dead, and China, where it caused a mass evacuation of more than a million people. 51 people have been reported missing, not including the unknown number from the village mentioned above.

Morakat, destroyed more than 6,000 homes in mainland China and affected 8.8 million people the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.  Typhoon Morakot has now been downgraded to a tropical storm.
