Circumstances Surrounding Missing Cargo Ship Spark New Theories

August 13, 2009

Global (ChattahBox) – The mysterious disappearance of a 15-crew Russian-manned cargo ship somewhere in European waters has sparked theories about possible state interference.  The ship, called the Arctic Sea, was last heard from on July 28 while sailing through the English Channel with a reported $1.8 million cargo of timber. The Arctic Sea and it’s crew had a rough voyage from the outset. Flying a Maltese flag, it was allegedly traversing Swedish waters on July 24 when it was overtaken by a small boat and boarded by 8 to 12 men carrying firearms, the Malta Maritime Authority said in a statement. The intruders were “allegedly masked and wearing uniforms” with “police” written on them, the statement said, and harshly interrogated the crew, saying they were checking the ship for illegal drugs.

“The members of the crew were allegedly assaulted, tied, gagged and blindfolded, and some of them were seriously injured,” the statement said.

The possibility that pirates had attacked the cargo ship sometime after they were last heard from off the coast of France is no certainty.

“I think there was probably some sort of secret cargo on this vessel, not criminal but secret, and a third party of some sort did not want the cargo to get to another party so this highly sophisticated operation was cooked up,” Mikhail Boytenko of Russian maritime journal, Sovfracht, told Reuters.

“I don’t think that it was pirates who took this vessel but it really smells of some sort of state involvement. This is real cloak and dagger stuff, like a [John] le Carre novel.”

Pirates, while fairly common in certain African regions, are unheard of in European waters, at least in modern times. No other cases have been reported. Warships from the Russian Black Sea Fleet have already joined the search, but so far all attempts to raise the ship on radio or locate its emergency beacon have failed.

But with no traces of the cargo-carrying giant, and more personnel being sent out to search for them, it is still hard to believe in stories of state secrets and mysterious cargo.

More likely possibilities, such as insurance fraud where ship could be re-registered, and re-painted or some kind of commercial dispute are still being investigated.

Piracy has exploded off the coast of some countries. All the necessary measures must be put in place to prevent an event like this to happen. The crew must at least be assured of safety.
