Senator Jim Webb Wins Release of US Prisoner John Yettaw in Myanmar

August 16, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Senator Jim Webb completed his three-day visit to Myanmar leaving with American citizen John William Yettaw, who was recently sentenced by a Myanmar district court to serve seven years’ hard labor.  The release was secured through efforts made by Webb who met with Myanmar top leader Senior-General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, in Nay Pyi Taw Saturday.  Yettaw was convicted by the court on charges of breaching security laws by swimming uninvited, to the lakeside house of Burma’s pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi (photo left) for three days in early May.  She said she allowed him to stay overnight to overcome his exhaustion. Yettaw’s actions which have not been clearly explained may have been with good intentions but many reports characterize him as very sick and perhaps not mentally balanced.   During the trial, a picture emerged of an emotionally disturbed man with a tragic past who believed he was on a mission from God to prevent her death. The incident led to more punishment for Suu Kyi, who has spent 14 of the past 20 years in detention, originally receiving another three years in jail for hosting Yettaw, before her sentence was commuted to 18 months house arrest.  Senator Webb’s trip also had a broader purpose, “to have substantive conversations” as the head of the Senate’s Foreign Relations subcommittee on East Asia and Pacific affairs, with Myanmar’s reclusive junta that has been reluctant to have high level meetings with the U.S.
