Report Claims President Obama Close to Deal With Israel Allowing Mideast Peace Talks

August 26, 2009

(ChattahBox) — According to a new report originating from the UK Guardian newspaper here, President Obama is poised to seal a breakthrough Israeli-Palestinian deal that would allow him to announce the resumption of long-stalled Middle East talks.  In exchange for Israel’s cooperation, the U.S. would take a harder line on Iran’s nuclear weapons program, seeking along with Britain and France expanded U.N. sanctions against Iran’s oil and gas industry, virtually crippling the nation’s economy until they are reigned in. Israel would in turn agree to a partial freeze on constructing settlements, the paper said. The newspaper quoted an official as saying: “The message is: Iran is an existential threat to Israel; settlements are not.”

The Palestinians have refused to re-enter peace negotiations unless Israel completely halts all settlement activity.   Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad released a government plan Tuesday calling for the establishment of a de facto Palestinian state by the end of 2011 regardless of the outcome of negotiations with Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and U.S. Special Envoy George Mitchell are to meet privately in London this week, but negotiations have supposedly reached such an advanced stage that France and Russia have both offered to host a new round of talks. The goal is for Obama, flanked by Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Arab leaders, plans to make the announcement of resumed peace talks either in New York on Sept. 23 or at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh the next day, The Guardian said.
