U.N’s Curriculum Proposal For Ages 5 – 18 Sex Ed Creates Controversy

August 26, 2009

Global (ChattahBox) – The U.N. has proposed a controversial new sexual education regime that they say will help to inform children at an earlier age of various topics such as masturbation, gender violence, and abortion.

The curriculum aims to separate classes into four age ranges, 5 – 8, 9 – 12, 12 – 15, and 15 – 18. Younger children would be taught more about gender issues, such as basic anatomy, sexual identity, and gender violence, with increasing topics as they get older.

But some of the topics have caused alarm in many, who are confused as to why the U.N. would feel it necessary to expose children to some issues they will be too young to understand.

For example, gender violence and stereotypes to five-year-olds would include homophobia and transphobia among their topics. Masturbation would also be on the list.

Once in the 9-year-old group children would begin learning about safe and legal abortions, and the facts behind the process. By 12-years-old they would begin to learn the reasons some get abortions, and how to find safe resources.

Many experts are confused as to why some of these topics are being introduced at the proposed ages. The U.N. has released a statement saying that it is all in an effort to better prepare children for adulthood at an earlier age, and that while the topics are being discussed, they will only be described with as much detail as is ‘age appropriate’.

Even many who agree with teaching basic sexual education within those age groups have expressed concern over the curriculum that has been proposed.

However, the details behind the topics discussed will doubtlessly be mild, and the approach aimed at children, rather than in an adult discussion format. The cries heard from many ‘curriculum responsibility’ and conservative groups are probably exaggerated.

For example, while it could be argued that some of these plans for the youngest kids are ridiculous, many groups have already been proposing this to be a way of destroying ‘traditional marriage’. Talk about irrational thinking…

The lesson plans were created by the United Nation’s branch, the Economic, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in a 98-page report.
