Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Calls For Punishment Of Those Who ‘Caused Unrest’

August 28, 2009

Iran (ChattahBox) – Showing once again the deep division and corruption within the Iranian government, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for severe punishment of those he says conspired with outside forces to create unrest post-election in Tehran.

“We must deal with those who led these events. Those who organized, incited and pursued the plans of the enemies must be dealt with decisively,” he spoke in response to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has said he does not believe there was any orchestrating for unrest with anyone outside of the country.

The difference in statements shows a further widening of opinion within Iran, as Ahmadinejad’s attempts to push opponents from any influence is met with resistance from a majority of the country.

Arrests of key opposition seems unlikely at this point, but still the president is pushing on, and, some day, reducing his own influence in the process.
