WHO Warns of Severe Form of Swine Flu Infecting the Young and Healthy

August 29, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The World health organization is issuing a warning about a severe form of the swine flu that affects the lungs of young and healthy individuals, causing respiratory failure. The organization is cautioning hospitals to be prepared for an onslaught of patients requiring specialized intensive care treatment.

Doctors in countries in the southern hemisphere, which have been experiencing a winter outbreak of the swine flu in epidemic proportions, report of young and healthy individuals requiring hospital stays, after the swine flu goes straight to their lungs. About 15 percent of those hospitalized require care in intensive care units to save their lives.

“Preparedness measures need to anticipate this increased demand on intensive care units, which could be overwhelmed by a sudden surge in the number of severe cases,” said WHO officials. The H1N1 virus has already reached epidemic levels in Japan and is rapidly increasing in tropical regions.

Unlike typical seasonal flu outbreaks that mostly sickens the elderly, the swine flu is infecting otherwise young and healthy people, causing more serious complications and deaths among young adults and children.

“Perhaps most significantly, clinicians from around the world are reporting a very severe form of disease, also in young and otherwise healthy people, which is rarely seen during seasonal influenza infections,” WHO said.

Some groups are more at risk than others WHO officials found. Minority groups and indigenous population have a four to five times higher risk than the general population of becoming seriously ill from the swine flu. It’s believed that “lower standards of living and poor overall health status, including a high prevalence of conditions such as asthma, diabetes and hypertension,” may account for the higher risk.

People with certain illnesses are also more prone to developing the more severe form of the swine flu, such as respiratory disease, asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and immunosuppression.”

Obesity has also been shown to pose a higher risk for developing serious complications from swine flu, requiring hospital care. More than 230 million people globally have asthma, and more than 220 million have diabetes.

WHO believes the swine flu will infect more of the population than regular seasonal flu, because few people have an immunity to the new H1N1 virus. Medical experts predict as much as a third of the population may become sickened with the swine flu.

This new “swine flu” passes easily from human to human (not from pig to human). There is no vaccine to prevent this new strain of influenza. Vaccinations work by introducing a weakened or dead strain of the virus into the body. The body builds up an immunity to the weakened or dead virus. When the full strength live virus tries to invade the body the body can fight back with the previously produced antibodies
