Pakistan Military Announces It Has Seized Top Taliban Spokesman

September 11, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Inter Services Public Relations, the press department of the Pakistani military, announced Friday they have arrested the spokesman for the Taliban in the Swat Valley, where troops have spent five months fighting Islamist insurgents following a two-year reign of terror. The area lies close to Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, where al-Qaida and Taliban have long held sway.

Muslim Khan was captured with four colleagues, including key militant commander Mehmood Khan, during a security operation in the suburb of Mingora, the main town in Swat district.  Muslim Khan was the public face of the pro-Taliban group in the northwest valley and is the first senior pro-Taliban leader from Swat to be captured by the Pakistani military.  Muslim Khan had a bounty of 10 million rupees ($122,000) on his head for involvement in terrorist activities. The same reward was offered by the government for information about Mehmood Khan.  Rumor is these arrests actually took place days ago, and that the announcement was delayed for the 9/11 anniversary.
