There are Now 1 Billion Hungry People in the World

September 16, 2009

(ChattahBox)—World hunger has set an alarming new record. There are now, for the first time ever, more than 1 billion hungry people in the world, according to the U.N. World Food Program (WFP).

The United Nations relief agency also reports that food aid is at a 20-year low at the most critical time for the growing numbers of hungry people across the globe.

The global downturn has had a negative impact on the amount of funds flowing to the relief agency, while at the same time, the recession has affected the ability of the world’s poor to purchase food, with dwindling resources and increasing food prices.

The U.N. relief agency is experiencing a severe budget shortfall. The WFP needs $6.7 billion to continue to feed the hungry through 2009, but to date, only has $2.6 billion in funding.

Recent severe weather conditions are also producing food shortages and loss of income.

“This comes at a time of great vulnerability for the hungry,” said the WFP.
