NATO Secretary-General Proposes Linking Missile Defense System With Russia

September 18, 2009

(ChattahBox) — A day after the U.S. dropped plans for a large defensive missile system in Europe that Russia opposed, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has urged the Western alliance and Moscow to consider linking their defensive missile systems together. Is this like inviting the wolf into the chicken coop, or a stroke of genius remains to be seen.    But the Secretary-General’s rational is that NATO and Russia have a shared interest in combating the proliferation of intercontinental ballistic missile technology in other less stable countries.

In his speech today, Fogh Rasmussen the former Danish prime minister says,”I would like Russia and Nato to agree to carry out a joint review of the new 21st Century security challenges, to serve as a firm basis for our future co-operation. We should explore the potential for linking the US, Nato and Russia missile defense systems at an appropriate time.”

He called on Moscow for a “genuine new beginning in our relationship, in our own interests and that of the entire international community”.

“If North Korea stays nuclear and if Iran becomes nuclear, some of their neighbors might feel compelled to follow their example.”

Bringing Russia into the shared defense, may see Moscow become more cooperative in diplomatic efforts to bring Iran and North Korea to the bargaining table or tighten the sanctions needed to gain leverage.

Rasmussen said he would “expect Russia to put maximum political and diplomatic pressure on Iran to stop its nuclear aspirations”.

It’s definitely in the best interests of both NATO and Russia to have a working missile defense system; since both sides know that neither side could possibly win a nuclear war, the real threat is unstable nations like Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan (which might realistically be in some danger of being taken over by Islamic extremists).
