Pray Before Sex: British Catholic Group Frowns on Foreplay

September 18, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The London-based Catholic Truth Society recently published a new “Prayer Book for Spouses,” urging couples to pray together before having sex, providing quite a lengthy prayer for couples to recite together. Apparently, the only sexual foreplay condoned by the Catholic Society for married couples is a slow and sexy prayer.

The Catholic Truth Society is an independent publisher and charity and publisher for the Holy See, founded in 1868.

The sex prayer is intended to remind couples that sexual union is meant to represent “the sacrament of marriage itself.”

The prayer, entitled “Prayer before making love“ reads:

“Father, send your Holy Spirit into our hearts.
Place within us love that truly gives, tenderness that truly unites, self-offering that tells the truth and does not deceive, forgiveness that truly receives, loving physical union that welcomes.
Open our hearts to you, to each other and to the goodness of your will.
Cover our poverty in the richness of your mercy and forgiveness.
Clothe us in our true dignity and take to yourself our shared aspirations, for your glory, for ever and ever. Mary, our Mother, intercede for us. Amen”

Understandably, the idea was ridiculed after the “pray before sex” suggestion was first reported by the Daily Mail, earlier in the month. Auxiliary Bishop Paul Hendricks of Southwark, a member of the Society, admitted that the prayer perhaps “is a bit idealistic.”

The Catholic Truth Society acknowledged the “often mocking or critical” coverage of its couples’ sex prayer.

Fergal Martin, director of the Society, lamented the “secular derision” of the sex prayer saying, the “area of sexual intimacy can become the victim of half-truths and little deceits.”

Martin views the mocking of the sex prayer, as evidence that our society harbors hostility towards the Christian faith.

“The reaction to the prayer book illustrates how much more work needs to be done in this field, where a great deal of hostility to the Christian faith, even ignorance and puerility, remains entrenched,” wrote Martin on the Society’s Web site.

However, all of the media attention has had the unintended effect of boosting sales of the “Prayer Book for Spouses.” Martin wrote that the “publisher has been inundated with orders for the book”

Well, that is one way to talk dirty, I guess.
