India’s First Lunar Mission Finds Water on the Moon

September 24, 2009

(ChattahBox)—India’s Space Research Organization launched its first unmanned spacecraft to orbit the Moon last October, and the analysis of the data obtained from the mission, shows evidence of large quantities of water on the moon. The Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft was equipped with highly sensitive equipment from NASA and other countries, enabling the detection of tiny molecules of water.

The data from the Chandrayaan-1 was analyzed by scientists from Brown University in Rhode Island, where they discovered spectrographic evidence of water. The water molecules appeared in great abundance at the poles of the Moon.

The scientists explained that they detected tiny water molecules and not giants bodies of water.

Carle Pieters of Brown said, “When we say ‘water on the moon,’ we are not talking about lakes, oceans or even puddles. Water on the moon means molecules of water and hydroxyl (hydrogen and oxygen) that interact with molecules of rock and dust specifically in the top millimetres of the moon’s surface.”

The India Space agency is extremely pleased with the find, as detecting lunar water was the primary goal of the mission.

Dr Mylswamy Annadurai, the mission’s project director in Bangalor said, “It’s very satisfying.”

I think its cool that there is water on the moon but what does that mean for us will there ever be a chance to live there ???

Very cool. If water can be present, in any amount, this proves that life is sustainable. Scientists were surprised at this and will continue to be surprised as their knowledge expands.

I always thought it was funny that the Moon was supposed to be the only dry body

How rediculous!!! India spending so much money trying to find on water on the moon…when they should be spending the money finding clean water for the hundreds of villages lacking basics such as clean water, waste management and sanitation.
